Deep in northwestern Venezuela, above the waters of Lake Maracaibo, one of the most extraordinary atmospheric phenomena on Earth lights up the night sky almost continuously. Where does the Catatumbo Lightning occur?
The Catatumbo Lightning forms near the point where the Catatumbo River flows into Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela. The lake is surrounded by mountains, including parts of the Andes, creating a unique geographical basin that plays a major role in the development of the storms.
Warm, moisture-rich air from the Caribbean Sea moves across the lake and collides with cooler mountain air descending from the surrounding highlands. This constant interaction destabilizes the atmosphere and helps generate towering thunderclouds almost every night.
Because the storms repeatedly form over the same region, the area experiences an astonishing level of electrical activity throughout much of the year.

Why is the lightning so intense?
Scientists believe the phenomenon is caused by a rare combination of:
- tropical heat,
- extreme humidity,
- surrounding mountain ranges,
- and powerful nighttime wind patterns.
As warm air rises from Lake Maracaibo and collides with cooler descending air, massive cumulonimbus storm clouds rapidly develop. Inside these clouds, ice particles and water droplets collide continuously, generating enormous electrical charges that produce constant lightning.
The storms are especially active during the rainy season and can continue for hours without interruption.
At peak intensity, observers have recorded:
- up to 28 lightning strikes per minute,
- storms lasting up to 10 hours,
- and activity occurring on more than 140 nights each year.
Earth’s lightning capital
The Lake Maracaibo region is widely considered the lightning capital of Earth.
NASA and meteorological researchers have identified the area as having the highest concentration of lightning activity anywhere on the planet. Some studies estimate that parts of the region experience thunderstorms on nearly 300 days each year.
Because of its intensity, the Catatumbo Lightning can illuminate huge portions of the night sky and is sometimes visible from hundreds of kilometers away.
Historically, sailors referred to the phenomenon as the:
“Beacon of Maracaibo”
because the nearly constant flashes acted like a natural lighthouse along the Venezuelan coast.

Can the storms stop?
Although the Catatumbo Lightning is often described as “eternal,” scientists have observed periods when the phenomenon weakened or temporarily disappeared.
One of the most unusual interruptions occurred in 2010, when severe drought conditions linked partly to El Niño appeared to suppress the thunderstorms for several months.
This event raised concerns among researchers because it suggested that changes in climate and atmospheric conditions could potentially influence one of Earth’s most remarkable weather systems.
Even so, the storms eventually returned and continue to occur regularly today.
