How to Read the Automated Hurricane Forecast

The direction statement is calculated from the sequence of official forecast positions. Intensity trends are based on the maximum sustained wind values supplied for the forecast points. If the data do not support a clear trend, the system is described as having little overall change rather than making a stronger claim.

Forecast Track and Cone of Uncertainty

The forecast track represents the predicted path of the tropical cyclone center. The cone of uncertainty illustrates historical forecast error and should not be interpreted as the full size of the storm. Hazardous weather can occur well outside the cone, especially from wind, rainfall, storm surge and tornadoes.

Atlantic and Pacific Tropical Systems

The tracker covers the Atlantic basin, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf region, as well as the Eastern and Central Pacific. Tropical outlook areas are also displayed so developing systems can be monitored before they become named tropical cyclones.

How Often Is the Forecast Updated?
