A powerful Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) unleashed destructive weather across eastern South Dakota, USA, during the early hours of June 29, producing hurricane-force wind gusts, large hail, confirmed tornadoes, and widespread damage.
Meteorologists say the storm generated downburst winds reaching up to 210 km/h (130 mph), making it one of the most destructive convective wind events to strike the region in recent years.
Entire communities were left without electricity as buildings, power lines, and wind turbines suffered catastrophic damage.
Destructive Winds Cause Widespread Damage
The community of Highmore, South Dakota, was among the hardest-hit areas.
Violent downburst winds tore through the town, severely damaging homes, farm buildings, grain silos, and commercial structures.
Power lines were brought down across the region, leaving thousands without electricity, while numerous trees and road signs were snapped or uprooted by the extreme winds.
Authorities are continuing damage assessments as cleanup operations begin.
Two Tornadoes Confirmed
In addition to the destructive straight-line winds, meteorologists confirmed that two tornadoes touched down during the severe weather outbreak.
Storm survey teams are continuing to evaluate damage paths to determine the tornadoes’ strength and classify them on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale.

Wind Farm Suffers Major Damage
One of the most remarkable scenes emerged from a wind farm located near Highmore.
Images from the area show that around twenty wind turbines were either heavily damaged or completely destroyed by the storm.
Several turbines had their blades ripped apart, while others collapsed entirely under the force of the powerful winds.
