A powerful tornado-like windstorm swept through northeastern Rome on the morning of June 3, causing widespread damage, uprooting dozens of trees, disrupting traffic, and leaving one person slightly injured.

The severe weather struck shortly after a strong thunderstorm moved across the Italian capital, transforming several neighborhoods into scenes of destruction within minutes.

Powerful Winds Cause Major Damage

The areas of Prati Fiscali, Conca d’Oro, Ponte Salario, and Montesacro were among the hardest hit.

Residents reported extremely strong winds that uprooted trees, tore down traffic signs, overturned waste containers, and scattered debris across roads and sidewalks. Numerous branches, flower pots, and other objects were blown from balconies and buildings.

Videos and photos shared on social media showed streets covered with debris and massive trees lying across roads and parked vehicles.

Around 60 Trees Reportedly Fell

According to Rome’s environmental department, approximately 60 trees were brought down by the storm, many of them large pine trees.

Several trees were completely uprooted, while others collapsed onto roads, vehicles, and public infrastructure.

One large pine tree crashed onto the roof of a gas station in the Prati Fiscali area, while significant damage was also reported at a local street market where umbrellas and vendor stands were blown away.

One Person Slightly Injured

Authorities confirmed that one person suffered minor injuries after two pine trees fell onto a vehicle in the Prati Fiscali district.

Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities have been reported despite the extensive damage caused by the storm.

Traffic Chaos Across the City

The fallen trees created major traffic disruptions across northeastern Rome.

A large tree collapsed onto the Tangenziale Est ring road, temporarily blocking traffic in both directions and causing severe congestion.

Several roads had to be closed while emergency crews worked to remove debris and secure dangerous areas.

Public transportation was also affected, with numerous bus routes experiencing major delays and being diverted due to blocked streets.

Firefighters Respond to Dozens of Emergencies

Rome’s Fire Brigade reported more than 40 emergency interventions related to fallen trees and dangerous branches.

Teams from the Civil Protection Department and municipal services were deployed throughout the affected districts to restore safety and clear roads.

Authorities estimate that normal conditions will gradually return as cleanup operations continue across the city.

The tornado-like event occurred during a period of heightened atmospheric instability across Italy, where thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hailstorms have affected several regions in recent days.

Meteorologists note that the interaction between very warm air masses and incoming disturbances can create conditions favorable for severe thunderstorms and localized tornadoes, even in densely populated urban areas such as Rome.
