The Japan Tsunami of 2011, also known as the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, was a massive disaster triggered by a magnitude 9.0-9.1 earthquake on March 11, 2011, off the northeast coast of Japan.
The earthquake generated massive tsunami waves that devastated coastal areas, particularly in the Tōhoku region, causing widespread destruction, over 18,000 deaths, and the meltdowns of three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
