💡 Did you know?
Sakurajima is one of the world's most active volcanoes and the iconic symbol of Kagoshima Prefecture. It has been erupting almost continuously since 1955, producing thousands of small explosive eruptions and frequent ash plumes each year. Once an island, Sakurajima became connected to the Osumi Peninsula during its massive 1914 eruption, when lava flows filled the narrow strait. Today, residents of Kagoshima have adapted to living alongside the volcano, with regular monitoring, evacuation drills and one of the world's most advanced volcanic observation systems.
