A series of dramatic videos recorded across southern Japan captured the terrifying moment a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kyushu on Tuesday, violently shaking homes, offices, shops and public buildings.

The earthquake, centered in Kumamoto Prefecture, triggered a tsunami advisory for parts of the region and prompted millions of people to receive emergency earthquake alerts on their phones and television broadcasts. Authorities continue assessing the damage while aftershocks remain possible.

Tsunami Advisory Issued Following the Quake

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami advisory for Ariake Bay shortly after the earthquake struck.

Officials warned that tsunami waves of up to one meter (about three feet) were possible along parts of the western coast of Kumamoto Prefecture and urged residents in coastal areas to remain alert until the advisory could be lifted.

Authorities later reported that no abnormalities had been detected at nearby nuclear power facilities, while emergency services began inspecting infrastructure across the affected region.
