Popocatépetl, affectionately known as "El Popo", is Mexico's second-highest mountain, rising to approximately 5,400 meters (17,700 feet). It is also one of the world's most closely monitored volcanoes because nearly 25 million people live within 100 kilometers of its summit. The volcano has remained active since 1994, producing frequent ash emissions, steam plumes and occasional explosive eruptions. Together with its neighboring peak, Iztaccíhuatl, Popocatépetl forms one of Mexico's most iconic landscapes and is deeply rooted in Aztec legend, symbolizing the eternal love between a warrior and a princess.
