Although Texas, USA, is not widely known for powerful earthquakes, the state experienced one of the strongest seismic events in its history on August 16, 1931. The Valentine Earthquake, centered near the small town of Valentine in West Texas, remains the largest earthquake ever recorded in the state.
With an estimated magnitude between 5.8 and 6.4 (most commonly reported around 6.0), the earthquake caused significant structural damage across western Texas and was felt over an enormous area extending into neighboring states and northern Mexico.
When Did the Earthquake Occur?
The earthquake struck during the early morning hours of August 16, 1931, near the town of Valentine in Jeff Davis County, West Texas.
Residents were awakened by violent shaking that lasted several seconds, followed by numerous aftershocks throughout the day.
The mainshock reached a maximum intensity of VIII (Severe) on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, making it the strongest documented earthquake ever to affect Texas.
Magnitude and Epicenter
Scientists have estimated the earthquake’s magnitude between 5.8 and 6.4, as modern seismic instruments were limited at the time.
Most historical references list the event as approximately magnitude 6.0, making it the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Texas history.
The epicenter was located near Valentine, a small desert community in West Texas, close to the Rio Grande Rift, one of the most tectonically active regions in the state.
Damage Across West Texas
Despite occurring in a sparsely populated region, the earthquake caused widespread damage.
Nearly every masonry building in Valentine suffered structural damage, while schools, homes, businesses, and public buildings developed major cracks.
Several brick structures partially collapsed, chimneys fell, windows shattered, and walls were severely damaged.
Ground cracking and small landslides were also reported in nearby mountainous terrain.
Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded, largely because of the area’s very low population density.
Felt Hundreds of Kilometers Away
The shaking extended across an exceptionally large area.
Reports indicated that the earthquake was felt throughout much of Texas, into New Mexico, and across northern Mexico.
Some historical accounts suggest weak shaking was noticed hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter, highlighting the efficiency with which seismic waves travel through the stable crust beneath Texas.
The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the earthquake was felt across more than 1.1 million square kilometers.

Why Do Earthquakes Occur in Texas?
Although Texas is far from major plate boundaries like California, earthquakes still occur because of ancient geological faults buried beneath the state.
The strongest natural earthquakes typically occur in West Texas, where tectonic stresses associated with the Rio Grande Rift continue to reactivate old faults.
In recent decades, seismic activity has also increased in some parts of West Texas due to wastewater injection associated with oil and gas production, although the 1931 Valentine earthquake was a natural tectonic event.
Other Strong Texas Earthquakes
While the 1931 Valentine earthquake remains the largest on record, several other significant earthquakes have occurred in Texas.
The 1995 Marathon earthquake reached a magnitude of 5.7, causing minor damage and two injuries in West Texas. More recently, earthquakes exceeding magnitude 5.0 have occurred near Mentone, Toyah, and other parts of the Permian Basin, drawing increased scientific attention to seismic hazards in the region.
Could a Larger Earthquake Strike Texas?
Seismologists acknowledge that earthquakes larger than magnitude 6 are possible in parts of West Texas, although they remain relatively rare.
Modern monitoring networks have significantly improved scientists’ ability to detect and study seismic activity across the state.
While Texas is unlikely to experience the frequency of major earthquakes seen in California or Alaska, the Valentine earthquake serves as a reminder that damaging seismic events can still occur in the Lone Star State.
A Historic Earthquake That Changed Texas Seismology
Nearly a century later, the 1931 Valentine earthquake remains the benchmark against which every significant Texas earthquake is measured.
It demonstrated that even regions considered relatively stable can produce powerful earthquakes capable of causing widespread damage.
Today, it continues to be one of the most important events in the seismic history of the United States and a key case study for geologists investigating earthquake hazards in the central and western parts of North America.
