Yellowstone National Park was rocked by an earthquake last night, sparking fears its supervolcano could be awakening.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) detected a magnitude 3.9 quake near Norris Geyser Basin, considered the Yellowstone Volcano, Tuesday at 8pm ET.
Seismic activity was felt in parts of Idaho, Montana and western Wyoming. The USGS reported three aftershocks ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 3.7 in just several hours following the initial quake.
Yellowstone is home to a supervolcano that last erupted 70,000 years ago, leading some experts to believe it is overdue. The Norris Geyser Basin is located at the intersection of two faults that slip past each other, producing random earthquakes.
The largest quake to hit the area was a magnitude 6 in 1975, but the USGS reported there was little damage, no injuries and no volcanic eruption.
