A powerful El Niño is rapidly developing across the tropical Pacific, and the latest seasonal forecasts suggest it could become a Super El Niño and potentially rank among the strongest events observed in decades.
The significance extends far beyond the Pacific Ocean. Strong El Niño events can reorganize large-scale atmospheric circulation, alter the position and strength of the jet streams and influence storm tracks, rainfall and temperature patterns across both North America and Europe.
The latest forecast update shows an unusually mature atmospheric response already developing ahead of Fall 2026 and Winter 2026/2027, making the coming months particularly interesting on both sides of the Atlantic.
Super El Niño continues to strengthen
Current observations show an exceptionally strong warm signal developing across the tropical Pacific.
According to the analysis, ocean temperature anomalies have already exceeded levels normally associated with a Super El Niño, although these values must remain elevated for the event to be formally sustained at that intensity.
Perhaps even more important is what is happening beneath the ocean surface. A powerful Kelvin Wave is carrying an enormous reservoir of unusually warm water eastward through the tropical Pacific. As this warm water reaches the surface, it can continue feeding the developing El Niño into the colder months.
The latest model projections also continue to strengthen the event. The NOAA CPC outlook presented in the analysis takes the seasonal average well above the +2°C Super El Niño threshold, while the NMME ensemble projects an exceptionally strong peak if its current forecast verifies.
But what does all of this mean for the weather?
United States: A major split in the weather pattern
The clearest signal is currently over North America.
Seasonal forecasts show a large high-pressure anomaly developing over Canada, while lower pressure dominates the North Pacific and a much more active storm track develops across the southern United States.
This creates what meteorologists describe as a split-flow pattern.
The polar jet stream is displaced farther north around the Canadian high-pressure system, while an energized subtropical jet carries Pacific moisture and low-pressure systems across the southern United States.
What makes the current forecast particularly notable is that this atmospheric configuration resembles a mature winter El Niño pattern, despite appearing in forecasts for the fall.
A wetter fall for large parts of the United States
The stronger southern jet stream is expected to have a significant influence on precipitation.
The seasonal forecast indicates above-normal rainfall across much of the United States, with the strongest wet signal across southern parts of the country.
That does not mean continuous rain throughout the fall. Seasonal forecasts describe the overall three-month tendency rather than individual storms.
But if the pattern verifies, the southern and southeastern United States could experience a more active sequence of moisture-rich weather systems as the season progresses.
At the same time, drier-than-normal conditions are indicated across portions of the Pacific Northwest, Upper Midwest and parts of Canada.
What about temperatures across the U.S.?
A broad warmer-than-normal signal is forecast across the northern United States and western-central Canada, associated with the persistent high-pressure anomaly.
Farther south, the temperature signal is less pronounced because increased cloud cover, precipitation and more frequent low-pressure systems associated with the subtropical jet could keep temperatures closer to seasonal averages.
This north-south contrast could become increasingly important as fall transitions into winter.
Winter 2026/2027 could become much more active
The same general pattern becomes stronger in the early winter forecasts.
High pressure remains a major feature over Canada, while a powerful low-pressure corridor develops across the southern and eastern United States.
This would support a highly active southern storm track capable of transporting large amounts of moisture across the country. At the same time, the Canadian blocking pattern could occasionally help push colder air southward.
That combination is important.
It does not automatically mean a severe or snowy winter, but it can increase the potential for stronger storms and sharp temperature contrasts across parts of the central and eastern United States during mid-to-late winter.
Europe: A different Super El Niño response
Across the Atlantic, the picture is substantially different.
The latest forecasts indicate a low-pressure anomaly over the North Atlantic, supporting stronger westerly and southwesterly flow into Europe.
That circulation transports relatively mild Atlantic air across the continent, and the fall temperature outlook consequently shows above-normal temperatures across much of Europe, particularly across central, western and southeastern regions.
But warmer does not necessarily mean drier.
Wetter conditions could accompany the warmth
The same Atlantic circulation responsible for transporting milder air can also carry considerable moisture.
Seasonal forecasts show above-normal fall precipitation across much of Europe, particularly across western and southern areas.
The NMME model provides a broadly similar signal, indicating warmer conditions across much of the continent alongside wetter conditions in northwestern, central and southeastern Europe.
This combination could produce a fall characterized by relatively mild conditions overall but interrupted by periods of unsettled, wet and potentially windy weather as Atlantic systems move across the continent.
Could Europe face a mild winter?
The early winter signal currently favors a relatively mild Atlantic-driven pattern across much of Europe.
Forecasts show an active North Atlantic storm track, with frequent low-pressure systems potentially bringing stronger winds, above-normal precipitation and milder maritime air into mainland Europe.
The NMME December-February temperature outlook similarly favors above-normal temperatures across much of the continent.
If this circulation became dominant for much of the winter, it could reduce the potential for persistent and widespread cold conditions across Europe.
Early snowfall forecasts also reflect this scenario. November is currently projected to bring below-normal snowfall across much of Europe, while higher elevations such as parts of the western Alps could benefit from greater precipitation combined with sufficiently low temperatures.
But there is a major reason not to write off winter yet.
The Polar Vortex could change the picture
One of the most interesting signals for Winter 2026/2027 is emerging high above the surface.
The Polar Vortex develops every fall and becomes an important driver of Northern Hemisphere winter circulation.
Strong El Niño winters can have an increased tendency toward Polar Vortex disruption and Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events.
When the Polar Vortex becomes significantly weakened or disrupted, the jet stream can become more distorted, potentially allowing Arctic air to escape farther south into North America, Europe or Asia.
The latest ECMWF forecast highlighted in the analysis indicates an unusual slowing of stratospheric winds around late December and January, while UKMO data also suggest significant weakening during this period.
That is something worth monitoring closely.
A disrupted Polar Vortex does not guarantee a major cold outbreak in the United States or Europe. The location of atmospheric blocking determines where the cold eventually travels.
But it could provide the mechanism needed to interrupt an otherwise relatively mild winter pattern.
United States vs Europe: Two different stories
At this stage, the Super El Niño signal is considerably clearer for North America than it is for Europe.
For the United States, the developing pattern favors a strong southern storm track, wetter conditions across many southern areas and a potentially active winter with significant contrasts between Canadian blocking and lower pressure farther south.
Europe appears more likely to experience a milder and wetter Atlantic-driven pattern, with an active storm track and reduced chances for prolonged cold if the current circulation persists.
However, Europe’s winter weather is much more sensitive to changes in North Atlantic circulation. The source analysis itself stresses that the European forecast remains less directly tied to El Niño than the North American pattern.
For that reason, claims that a Super El Niño already guarantees either a warm European winter or a severe U.S. winter would be premature.
The most important signals to monitor over the coming months will be the strength and location of the Super El Niño, the North Atlantic pressure pattern and the evolution of the Polar Vortex.
Together, these factors will determine whether Winter 2026/2027 follows the relatively mild seasonal outlook currently projected for Europe — and whether the United States experiences the increasingly active storm pattern now appearing in the models.
