The Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) confirmed that the quake struck at 6:18 am, with its epicentre sitting offshore, just south of Portugal, at a depth of about eight kilometres beneath the seabed. Locals reported feeling the earth move, but thankfully, there have been no reports of damage or injuries so far.
Aftershocks hit southern Spain following Gulf of Cádiz quake
In the hours surrounding the main tremor, the IGN picked up on two smaller aftershocks rumbling through the same stretch of water. The first came just before 6 am, registering at 2.4, while the second, slightly weaker at 1.9, followed shortly after 7 am.
