Torrential Downpour Causes Chaos in Jaén
Dramatic flash floods struck southern Spain after an intense thunderstorm unleashed torrential rain and hail over the city of Jaén, turning streets into fast-flowing rivers within minutes.
The severe weather caused widespread disruption across the popular Andalusian city, with residents caught off guard by the sudden intensity of the storm. Videos shared on social media show powerful floodwaters sweeping through streets, carrying debris, trash containers and even threatening vehicles.
Pedestrians Swept Away by Floodwaters
Several shocking videos captured the moment pedestrians struggled against the rapidly rising waters.
Witnesses reported that the storm erupted suddenly around 8:00 p.m. local time, bringing extremely heavy rainfall in a very short period. In some of the footage, people can be seen losing their footing as strong currents drag them through flooded streets.
One particularly dramatic video shows a man being swept away by the rushing water, while another captures a person floating through a flooded roadway next to partially submerged vehicles.
Underground Parking Lots Flooded
The storm also caused serious problems in underground parking facilities, where floodwaters surged inside with remarkable force.
Cars became trapped as water levels rose rapidly, while streets, sidewalks and public spaces were overwhelmed by the sudden deluge. In some areas, paving stones were reportedly ripped from the ground by the strength of the water.
Outdoor terraces that had been filled with customers only hours earlier were transformed into dangerous flood zones.
Nearly 50 Millimeters of Rain in One Hour
According to emergency services and local weather monitoring networks, approximately 50 millimeters (2 inches) of rain fell in just one hour.
Even more remarkable, around 32 millimeters were recorded in only 15 minutes in some locations.
The city’s drainage system was unable to cope with the volume of water, leading to overflowing manholes and underground drainage channels that worsened flooding across several neighborhoods.

Weather Alerts Issued Before the Storm
Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, had placed the area under an orange weather warning before the storm developed.
Authorities urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and advised drivers to abandon their vehicles if floodwaters reached axle height.
More Storms Possible
Yellow weather warnings remain in effect across parts of Andalusia, including areas near Córdoba, Seville and Granada.
Additional alerts are active around Zaragoza, while orange-level warnings have also been issued in parts of northwestern Spain, including sections of Galicia and areas near Ponferrada.

First Major Summer Storms of 2026
Meteorologists describe the event as one of the first significant summer severe weather outbreaks of 2026 in Spain.
Despite the dramatic scenes and widespread flooding, emergency services reported that no serious injuries or major structural damage had been confirmed as of the latest updates.
However, authorities remain on alert as additional localized thunderstorms could develop in the coming days, bringing the risk of further flash flooding across affected regions.
