A catastrophic torrent of water, mud, ice and rock tore through communities across the Himalayas near the border between Nepal and Tibet, leaving more than 160 people dead and over 1,000 missing.
The disaster unfolded when a massive collapse of ice and rock at high altitude triggered a devastating flood that raced down steep mountain valleys with enormous force, sweeping away homes, roads, bridges, vehicles and energy infrastructure.

More than 1,000 people remain missing
The scale of the disaster remains difficult to assess, with authorities on both sides of the Nepal-China border reporting large numbers of missing people.
Nepal’s disaster management authorities said 823 people remained unaccounted for, including at least 579 tourists, both Nepalese and foreign nationals.
On the Chinese side, another 558 people were reported missing.
Officials have warned that there may be some overlap between the different lists, meaning the exact number of missing people has not yet been firmly established.
Among those being searched for are citizens of India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.
Hundreds of tourists and pilgrims among the missing
Many of those caught in the disaster had travelled to the region as tourists or pilgrims.
A significant number were heading toward Kailash Mansarovar, a high-altitude area in Tibet regarded as sacred by several religious traditions, including Hinduism and Buddhism.
One tour operator reported that 47 people from a single group were missing, including two children.
That group included travellers from Australia, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Nepal.
“I ran, and then I saw a wall of water”
Survivors have described the terrifying speed at which the disaster unfolded.
A worker in the badly affected Rasuwa area said he began running when he saw what appeared to be a huge wall of water descending toward him with a deafening roar.
The flood swept him away with mud and debris, but he managed to grab hold of a tree and survived.
Another survivor, a 68-year-old man, described trying to save his wife by helping her onto a rooftop.
He was unable to reach her in time before the mud swept her away.
“Entire villages and marketplaces have disappeared”
The destruction across the affected region is extensive.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said that entire villages and market areas had disappeared.
Homes, cars and trees have been buried or submerged in mud, while helicopters continue flying over remote mountain areas in search of survivors.
Power outages have also affected parts of the region after hydroelectric infrastructure was damaged.
Families have gathered around emergency and military facilities, waiting for information about missing relatives as search teams continue working through difficult terrain.
It was not an earthquake – What the latest evidence shows
Initial reports linked the catastrophe to a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, which was thought to have triggered the collapse of part of a glacier.
However, later analysis by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that no conventional earthquake had occurred.
Instead, the seismic signal appears to have been generated by the collapse itself — enormous masses of ice and rock breaking away and the subsequent movement of debris.
Preliminary satellite imagery suggests that a rock-and-ice avalanche triggered the destructive flow along the Lende River, around 20 kilometres northeast of the Rasuwa-Gyirong border crossing between Nepal and China.

Why the disaster became so destructive
The extreme terrain of the Himalayas can greatly amplify disasters of this kind.
When huge volumes of ice, rock and water break loose at high elevation, gravity accelerates the material down steep mountain slopes and through narrow valleys.
As the flow gains speed, it can pick up additional sediment, rocks, trees and water, dramatically increasing its destructive power.
This helps explain how the torrent was able to destroy infrastructure and overwhelm populated areas within minutes.
Race against time to find survivors
Large rescue operations are underway on both sides of the border.
In Tibet, nearly 800 rescue personnel and around 150 vehicles have reportedly been mobilised, alongside trained dogs and boats.
The Chinese leadership ordered emergency teams to prioritise the search for missing people and the evacuation of communities still at risk.
United Nations teams and partner organisations have also begun mobilising personnel and supplies for affected communities in Nepal, while emergency international assistance has been announced.
The full scale of the tragedy may not yet be known
With more than 160 confirmed deaths and over 1,000 people listed as missing, authorities fear the final toll could rise significantly.
Some remote settlements remain difficult to reach because roads and bridges have been destroyed, while rescue teams are still trying to access isolated valleys.
