More than 2,500 residents have been ordered to evacuate in northeastern Japan as two wildfires continue to burn for a second consecutive day, raising concerns in coastal and mountainous communities.
Fires Break Out in Otsuchi Town
The fires were reported in Iwate Prefecture, specifically in the town of Otsuchi.
The first blaze began Wednesday afternoon in the Kozuchi district, quickly spreading to nearby woodland and multiple structures. Firefighters arriving at the scene found several buildings already destroyed by the flames.
Second Fire Ignites Nearby
A second wildfire broke out later the same day in the Kirikiri district, approximately 10 kilometers away, in a mountainous area close to residential zones.
The proximity of the fires to homes prompted immediate concern, leading authorities to expand evacuation orders.
Thousands Evacuated
Local officials confirmed that more than 2,500 people were instructed to leave their homes as a precaution.
Authorities stated that all residents were able to evacuate safely, although one woman was reported injured after a fall at an evacuation center.
Fires Continue to Spread
By early Thursday morning, approximately 200 hectares of land had been burned as firefighters worked urgently to contain both blazes.
Efforts remain ongoing, with emergency crews battling difficult terrain and trying to prevent the fires from reaching additional structures.
Government Response Activated
In response to the developing situation, the government established an emergency information liaison center to coordinate response efforts and monitor the crisis.
Officials continue to assess the situation closely as firefighting operations intensify.
A Developing Emergency
While no fatalities have been reported, the situation remains serious as fires continue to burn near populated areas.
Authorities remain on high alert, with evacuation measures and emergency coordination in place as the response continues.
