Italy is grappling with devastating floods and landslides after relentless storms battered large parts of the country. Torrential rain has paralyzed transport networks, forced evacuations and left entire communities cut off.
The Fire and Rescue Service reported more than 280 emergency operations in the past 24 hours. Roads turned into rivers, basements were submerged and falling trees damaged vehicles and homes. In Rome and the surrounding towns of Bracciano, Sacrofano and Castelli Romani, firefighters have been deployed nonstop to tackle the chaos.
In the northern regions, the situation is just as dire. A major landslide in Lecco brought rail traffic to a halt, while in Como, dozens of families were forced to abandon their homes. Meanwhile, on the island of Elba in Tuscany, entire neighborhoods were cut off, with dramatic footage showing torrents of water rushing through Portoferraio’s streets.
Authorities in Venice and Veneto have declared a yellow weather alert. The city’s MOSE flood barrier system was raised for the first time this autumn, protecting Venice from a dangerous sea-level rise.
Meteorologists warn that more heavy rainfall is on the way, heightening the risk of further floods and landslides. Emergency crews remain on high alert as Italy battles one of the most destructive weather events of the season.
