India recorded its hottest August since nationwide temperature records began in 1901, marking another significant milestone in the country’s long-term warming trend.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country’s average temperature during August reached 28.01°C (82.42°F), around 0.67°C above the long-term average for the month.
The new record narrowly surpassed the previous August record set in 2023, when India’s nationwide average temperature reached approximately 28.0°C.
Although a difference of just a fraction of a degree may appear small, the figure represents the average temperature across an enormous country for an entire month, making the record climatologically significant.
India’s Hottest August in More Than 120 Years of Records
India’s nationwide meteorological records extend back to 1901, providing scientists with more than a century of observations against which modern temperatures can be compared.
The average temperature of 28.01°C should not be confused with the much higher daytime temperatures experienced during individual heatwaves.
Instead, it represents temperatures averaged across the country and throughout the month.
The fact that the previous August record was only recently established in 2023 also highlights how frequently exceptionally warm conditions have occurred in recent years.
Below-Normal Monsoon Rainfall Intensified the Heat
Reduced monsoon rainfall played an important role in creating the unusually warm conditions.
India received approximately 16% less rainfall than normal during August, according to meteorological authorities.
Rainfall and temperature are closely connected during the monsoon season.
Clouds reduce the amount of solar radiation reaching the ground, while evaporation from wet soil consumes energy and provides a natural cooling effect.
When rainfall decreases and soils become drier, more of the available solar energy can instead heat the land surface and the atmosphere above it.
Under the right atmospheric conditions, weaker monsoon rainfall can therefore contribute to significantly higher temperatures.
What Role Did El Niño Play?
The large-scale climate pattern known as El Niño was also an important factor affecting weather conditions.
El Niño occurs when sea surface temperatures become unusually warm across parts of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
However, its effects extend far beyond the Pacific.
Changes in tropical ocean temperatures can alter atmospheric circulation around the planet, influencing rainfall, temperature and storm patterns thousands of kilometres away.
Historically, a number of El Niño events have been associated with weaker southwest monsoon rainfall over India, although the relationship is complex and an El Niño event does not automatically mean that India will experience drought.
Why the Indian Monsoon Is So Important
India’s summer monsoon is much more than a seasonal weather phenomenon.
It is one of the most important components of the country’s economy and water supply.
A substantial proportion of India’s annual rainfall normally occurs during the southwest monsoon season from June through September.
Agriculture, reservoirs, groundwater supplies and hydroelectric power generation all depend heavily on these rains.
Significant rainfall deficits can therefore have consequences extending well beyond meteorology, potentially affecting crops, water availability and food production.
India Is Particularly Vulnerable to Extreme Heat
India is among the countries most exposed to the consequences of extreme heat.
Its enormous population, densely populated cities and the large number of people working outdoors increase the number of people potentially exposed during prolonged periods of dangerous temperatures.
Access to air conditioning and adequately cooled buildings is also highly uneven.
The danger becomes even greater when extreme temperatures occur alongside high humidity.
Humid conditions reduce the efficiency of sweating, making it more difficult for the human body to release excess heat.
This means that air temperature alone does not always accurately describe how dangerous a heatwave can become.
Hot Nights Can Be Just as Important
Minimum nighttime temperatures are another important factor during prolonged periods of extreme heat.
A cooler night normally allows buildings and the human body to release some of the heat accumulated during the daytime.
When nighttime temperatures remain unusually high, this recovery period becomes much shorter.
The effect can be particularly pronounced in major cities because of the urban heat island effect.
Concrete, asphalt and buildings absorb large amounts of solar energy during the day and gradually release that heat after sunset, keeping urban environments warmer well into the night.
How Climate Change Is Affecting Extreme Heat
No single heat event should automatically be attributed entirely to climate change without a dedicated attribution study.
The broader scientific trend, however, is clear.
As Earth’s average temperature rises, the background climate in which natural weather variability occurs is becoming warmer.
This makes exceptionally high temperatures more likely and contributes to heatwaves becoming more frequent and, in many regions, more intense and longer-lasting.
For India, this trend is particularly significant because hundreds of millions of people can potentially be exposed to extreme temperatures.
Why an Average Temperature of 28.01°C Is Significant
At first glance, 28.01°C may not sound particularly extreme when compared with daytime temperatures exceeding 45°C during India’s most severe heatwaves.
But the two figures describe completely different things.
The 28.01°C figure represents an average across India over an entire month, rather than the maximum temperature recorded at one weather station.
India covers more than three million square kilometres and includes climates ranging from the Himalayan mountains to tropical coastal regions and arid areas of the northwest.
Setting a nationwide monthly temperature record across such a vast and geographically diverse country is therefore significant.
Another Warning From a Warming Climate
India’s record-breaking August adds another data point to a much broader global trend.
Heat records that once appeared exceptional are being challenged increasingly frequently in many parts of the world.
For India, the implications are particularly serious because extreme temperatures interact with water availability, agriculture, electricity demand, urban infrastructure and human health.
The country’s hottest August since records began in 1901 is therefore more than simply another number in the meteorological archives.
It is another reminder of how rapidly the boundaries of what was once considered normal weather and climate are changing.
