A moderate underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 was detected in the Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge on Tuesday morning.
The tremor, recorded at 8:05am on 1 April 2025, struck at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the surface, with its epicentre located at 46.1°S and 14.2°W, approximately 3 000 kilometres from South Africa.
Despite the quake’s strength, no tsunami warning has been issued, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
