In 1816, snow fell during summer, crops failed worldwide, and millions faced famine after the massive eruption of Mount Tambora triggered a global volcanic winter.
Snow fell in June. Crops failed in the middle of summer. Rivers froze unexpectedly, skies turned dark for months, and famine spread across Europe and North America. Around the world, millions of people faced hunger, disease, and economic collapse during what would later become known as “The Year Without a Summer.”
But this global disaster was not caused by war, nor by an asteroid.
It began with one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history.
In April 1815, Mount Tambora — a massive volcano located in present-day Indonesia — erupted with catastrophic force, sending enormous amounts of ash, sulfur, and gas high into Earth’s atmosphere. The eruption was so violent that it changed the planet’s climate, lowered global temperatures, and triggered one of the strangest weather years humanity has ever experienced.
The Eruption of Mount Tambora
On April 10, 1815, Mount Tambora exploded in what scientists classify as a VEI-7 eruption, making it one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the last 2,000 years.
The explosion was heard more than 2,000 kilometers away. Entire villages were destroyed instantly by pyroclastic flows, ashfall, and tsunamis. Historians estimate that tens of thousands of people died directly or indirectly from the eruption and its aftermath.
But the worst effects were only beginning.
Tambora injected massive quantities of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere. These particles spread around the globe and reflected sunlight back into space, reducing the amount of solar energy reaching Earth’s surface.
The result was a “volcanic winter.”
How a Volcano Changed the Global Climate
After the eruption, average global temperatures dropped dramatically. Scientists estimate that parts of the world cooled by as much as 1°C or more — an enormous shift for the global climate system.
While that number may sound small, the consequences were devastating.

The northeastern United States and Canada experienced some of the most shocking weather anomalies.
In June 1816, snowstorms struck New England. Lakes and rivers froze unexpectedly, and farmers watched their crops die repeatedly from late frosts. Some regions recorded freezing temperatures even during the middle of summer.
Europe suffered even worse conditions.
Heavy rain and cold temperatures destroyed wheat, oat, and potato harvests across several countries. Food shortages quickly evolved into famine. Riots erupted in some cities as desperate populations struggled to survive.
In parts of Switzerland and Germany, conditions became so severe that many families were forced to migrate in search of food and work.
Historians consider 1816 one of the worst agricultural disasters of the 19th century.
The Dark Skies That Inspired Frankenstein
The bizarre weather of 1816 also had an unexpected cultural impact.
That summer, a group of writers gathered near Lake Geneva in Switzerland, including Mary Shelley and Lord Byron. Because of the relentless rain, cold weather, and dark skies, they spent much of their time indoors telling ghost stories.
Out of those storm-filled nights came one of the most famous horror novels ever written: Frankenstein.
Many historians believe the gloomy atmosphere created by Tambora’s volcanic winter directly influenced the dark tone and imagery of the novel.
Could Something Like This Happen Again?
Scientists warn that another eruption on the scale of Tambora could still happen in the future.
Earth contains several volcanoes capable of producing massive climate-altering eruptions. While such events are rare, modern civilization would be extremely vulnerable to global crop failures, transportation disruption, food shortages, and economic instability.
A major volcanic eruption today could:
- disrupt global temperatures,
- reduce food production,
- affect air travel worldwide,
- trigger supply chain crises,
- and worsen geopolitical instability.
Modern climate science has significantly improved our understanding of volcanic winters, but the risks remain very real.
What Is a Volcanic Winter?
A volcanic winter occurs when a massive eruption injects sulfur-rich particles into the upper atmosphere. These aerosols reflect sunlight away from Earth, temporarily cooling the planet.
Unlike greenhouse warming, which traps heat, volcanic aerosols block incoming solar radiation.
Depending on the size of the eruption, the cooling effect can last from months to several years.
