A magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred off the coast of northeast Taiwan at 11:26 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Administration.
The CWA said its epicenter was 144.2 km east of Yilan County Hall, with a 15.3 km focal depth. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7 to gauge the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 3 in Hualien County. An intensity level of 2 was reported in Yilan County, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Nantou County, Taichung, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Hsinchu, Taitung County, Chiayi County, Changhua County, and Yunlin County.
A level 1 intensity was recorded in Taipei, Kaohsiung, Chiayi, and Tainan.
