A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Niksar district of Tokat province in northern Turkey early on March 13, sending residents rushing into the streets in the middle of the night.
The quake occurred at 3:35 a.m. local time and was widely felt across several nearby provinces, triggering concern among residents in the region.
According to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake struck at a depth of 6.37 kilometers, making it relatively shallow and therefore strongly felt in surrounding areas.
Tremors felt across multiple provinces
The seismic shaking was reported not only in Tokat but also in the neighboring provinces of Samsun, Amasya, Ordu and Sivas, according to AFAD.
Emergency teams immediately began field inspections to assess potential damage and monitor the situation.
Authorities said that no casualties or major structural damage were reported in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake.
Officials report no major disruptions
Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi stated that no negative developments had been reported so far and that emergency teams were continuing their assessment work across the affected areas.
Meanwhile, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said that initial inspections showed no disruption to transportation or communication networks following the earthquake.
Schools closed as a precaution
Local authorities in Tokat later announced that education across the province would be suspended for one day as a precautionary measure while safety inspections of school buildings and infrastructure continued.
Officials said the temporary suspension would allow authorities to complete structural checks and ensure the safety of students and teachers.
Residents remain cautious after the quake
Despite the cold weather, many residents chose to remain outside their homes or stay in their cars following the earthquake, reflecting widespread anxiety in a country frequently affected by seismic activity.
Turkey lies along several major fault lines and has experienced numerous destructive earthquakes throughout its history.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm while monitoring official announcements for any updates or aftershocks.
