An 8.8-magnitude earthquake, the strongest in the region in nearly 73 years, struck in the early hours of the morning in the sea off the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering a tsunami in Russia and Japan and prompting emergency warnings for citizens in almost all countries bordering the ocean.
