A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck approximately 219 kilometers (136 miles) south of Argentina on Friday, the US Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at 9.58 a.m. local time (1258GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to an initial assessment by the agency.
Initially, there were no casualties reported. A tsunami alert was issues minutes after the earthquake in Argentine and Chile. People are warned to stay away from the coastal areas.
