On October 22, two individuals were struck by lightning at the summit of Humphreys Peak near Flagstaff, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.
Search and rescue teams were dispatched immediately to reach the victims. However, helicopter operations were grounded due to poor weather, making the rescue more challenging, said department spokesperson Jon Paxton.
Humphreys Peak, standing at more than 12,600 feet, is the highest point in Arizona and part of the San Francisco Peaks. Its elevation and frequent afternoon thunderstorms make it a popular but potentially dangerous destination for hikers.
This is not the first lightning incident on Humphreys Peak. In July 2016, a 17-year-old hiker tragically died and two other teenagers from Tempe were injured when lightning struck the summit. Wade Young, 17, lost his life, while David Lyons, 18, and Jaxson Baxter, 17, sustained injuries.
Authorities warn hikers to exercise extreme caution, especially during the afternoon hours when thunderstorms are more likely. Lightning strikes on high-altitude peaks can be sudden and deadly, emphasizing the importance of weather awareness and preparedness in mountainous regions.
