A tornado was confirmed Saturday in San Juan County, Utah, touching down near the Colorado-Utah border, according to local meteorologists and emergency officials.
The tornado struck in southeast Utah, just north of Montezuma Creek, about 15 miles east of Bluff. It developed in the afternoon during a tornado warning that covered both San Juan County, Utah and Montezuma County, Colorado.
Authorities reported some structural damage, though the full extent is still being assessed. Local schools, including a high school and an elementary school in Montezuma Creek, were opened as emergency shelters for residents seeking safety.
Weather Alerts and Warnings
The National Weather Service issued the tornado warning as powerful storms moved through the region. Officials continue to urge residents and visitors in eastern Utah to stay alert due to the possibility of further severe weather.
KSL meteorologist Matt Johnson described the tornado as “impressive for Utah standards,” noting that such events are relatively rare in the region but can still pose significant risks.
