A rare and violent tornado struck the Val d’Oise area north of Paris, France, causing severe destruction, killing one person and seriously injuring several others. The sudden weather event hit multiple towns in the region on Monday evening, shocking residents and overwhelming local emergency services.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed the tragic news, stating:
“A sudden and rare intensity tornado episode struck several municipalities in Val d’Oise, causing the death of one person and seriously injuring several others. I extend my condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased victim.”
He added that he is closely monitoring the situation and praised the efforts of local authorities and rescue teams.
The tornado formed during a violent storm that swept through the region, toppling at least three cranes, one of which collapsed onto the Clos-Fleuri Medical-Educational Institute in Ermont. Footage shared online shows cranes being violently blown over by the powerful winds.
Widespread Damage Across Multiple Towns
The tornado and accompanying storm caused significant destruction in the towns of Eaubonne, Franconville, and Ermont, particularly in the Gambetta district and Henry-Dunant Street. Other nearby towns including Montmorency, Margency, Andilly, and Cormeilles-en-Parisis were also affected by extreme wind gusts.
According to local authorities, power outages have been reported in Ermont and Cormeilles-en-Parisis, while dozens of buildings have suffered severe roof damage, fallen trees, and blocked roads.
The Val-d’Oise prefecture described the storm as “a serious climatic event with very strong, unexpected wind gusts.” A crisis operations center has been set up, bringing together firefighters, emergency medical services, police, and road authorities to manage the aftermath.
Residents Describe Terrifying Moment
Local resident Elisabeth described the terrifying moment the tornado struck:
“The sky suddenly turned grey near Ermont town hall. I saw an impressive tornado of leaves and then a storm of rain fell on my car. I couldn’t see anything—it was like a wave crashing over me. The car was shaking. I stopped because I was afraid of being pushed off the road.”
Eaubonne mayor Marie-José Beaulande has also activated a local crisis unit, while Thierry Brun, Mayor of Margency, reported that municipal services have been deployed to secure public areas and prevent further accidents.
Transport Disruption
The severe weather has also caused major transport disruption across the region, with fallen trees blocking several major motorways and delaying travel.
Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid affected areas as emergency teams continue their work.
