A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck Indonesia’s Papua province on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers beneath the surface.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter was located on land about 32 kilometers southeast of the coastal town of Sarmi, which serves as the administrative center of Sarmi Regency.
Despite the intensity of the quake, authorities confirmed that no tsunami warnings were issued. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, but officials said assessments were ongoing.
