According to the latest report, 20 major wildfires are burning across Spain, and firefighters in the country have been struggling to contain them.
The country’s northwestern region is one of the worst-affected areas, and the situation is worsening due to the extremely hot weather.
To control this situation, the government had sent 500 more soldiers from the military emergency unit to aid with rescue operations. Read to know more details.
According to The Indian Express, 20 wildfires in Spain occurred amid extreme heat. The most-affected region was Galicia in the northwest, where several fires had merged into a massive blaze.
This severe incident forced the closure of the rail and highway services. This is Southern Europe’s worst wildfire season in almost 20 years, with Spain suffering from major damage.
As per the EU’s European Forest Fire Information System, this year, over 158,000 hectares in Spain were damaged because of wildfires.

The 158,000 hectares is almost the size of metropolitan London. As per The Indian Express, three people were killed because of wildfire-related incidents, and neighbouring Portugal is also fighting to handle the out-of-control wildfires.
As per Al Jazeera, Galician authorities have advised citizens to stay indoors and limit going out. They have been asked to wear masks to avoid inhaling smoke.
France and Italy have already sent their aircraft to Spain to help contain the wildfires. Two more water-dropping planes from the Netherlands are expected to join soon.
Virginia Barcones, head of the Civil Protection Agency, has said that they are expecting firefighters from other countries, too. She also added that the temperature will drop from Tuesday, but for now, the situation is “very adverse.”
