Portugal has been placed on red alert as a powerful Atlantic storm — part of an active weather pattern affecting Western Europe — impacts the country with extreme conditions, including very high winds, heavy precipitation and unusually large ocean waves.
According to meteorological authorities, storm warnings have been issued along much of Portugal’s western coastline, where wave heights are forecast to reach up to 15 meters (nearly 50 feet) in some areas. The unusually large swells and strong wind gusts have prompted emergency measures and widespread public safety advice.
In addition to the dangerous seas, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has reported that heavy rains and thunderstorms will accompany the system, and wind gusts may reach or exceed 100 km/h, particularly in elevated or exposed regions. The extreme maritime conditions have led to coastal flooding risks as well as hazardous travel conditions in several districts.
Authorities have recommended avoiding all non-essential travel, and some local services such as schools and public offices have been temporarily closed in areas under the highest warnings. Road closures and emergency responses have also been reported as crews work to clear fallen trees and debris brought down by the strong winds.
The storm’s impact is compounded by unusually strong Atlantic swells, which have drawn attention not only from authorities but also from coastal communities and visitors. Giant waves — similar to those sometimes seen at Nazaré, a famous location for extreme surf — have been noted along the coast, illustrating the power of the current weather system.
Residents and travelers are urged to stay updated through official forecasts and follow all civil protection guidance until conditions improve.
