A powerful earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday, triggering immediate tsunami alerts and sparking widespread concern across the region. Authorities have already warned residents that strong aftershocks may follow in the coming days.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit near Misawa, along Japan’s Pacific coast, at 16:15 Greek time. The tremor originated at a depth of 53 kilometres, creating the conditions for tsunami threats and possible secondary seismic activity.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning shortly after the quake, estimating that waves could reach up to three metres in height. Residents in coastal areas were urged to move to higher ground and follow emergency announcements closely.
