Bright fireball causes panic and explosion-like sound
A spectacular meteor was seen across multiple U.S. states, producing a powerful sound described by witnesses as an explosion, while in some areas residents even reported vibrations.
The event occurred on March 17, 2026, when a bright fireball streaked across the sky, drawing widespread attention and concern. The meteor was visible across a large portion of the country, including states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Loud boom and ground vibrations reported
The sound generated by the meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere was extremely strong, with many residents reporting that their homes shook and objects moved.
This explosion-like noise was caused by a shockwave created as the meteor broke apart in the atmosphere, traveling at extremely high speeds and surpassing the speed of sound.
Visible across several U.S. states
The meteor was observed across multiple regions, with reports coming from the Midwest and parts of the Northeast.
Its brightness was so intense that it remained visible even during daylight hours, which is considered a relatively rare phenomenon.

What scientists say about the event
According to early estimates, the meteor likely originated from a small asteroid, measuring a few meters in diameter and weighing several tons.
As it entered Earth’s atmosphere, friction with the air caused it to heat up and glow intensely before disintegrating, producing the powerful shockwave heard across multiple areas.
Scientists have not ruled out the possibility that small fragments may have reached the ground, although no confirmed reports of damage or injuries have been recorded so far.
A rare but not unusual phenomenon
Although the event caused concern, experts note that similar phenomena occur frequently, as small space objects enter Earth’s atmosphere on a regular basis.
However, the intensity of the light and the powerful sound associated with this event make it one of the most remarkable meteor sightings in recent years in the United States.
