An earthquake of magnitude 7 struck off the coast of Riverton in New Zealand on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey said.
The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), USGS said.
The National Emergency Management Agency and GNS Science were assessing whether the earthquake had created a tsunami that could affect New Zealand.
If a tsunami has been generated in this location it is not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least 1 hour.
