A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck the Timor region at 17:04 GMT on Sunday, according to a preliminary report from the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.
The earthquake’s epicenter was recorded at a depth of 85.6 kilometers (53.2 miles). Its coordinates were located at 9.22° South latitude and 123.87° East longitude, placing it near the Lesser Sunda Islands area in Southeast Asia.
So far, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, and authorities continue to monitor the region for aftershocks. Due to the earthquake’s relatively deep origin, its impact on the surface may have been reduced compared to shallow quakes of similar magnitude.
