A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck northwest China on December 4, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC). The tremor was recorded at 3:44 p.m. local time near Akqi County, close to the border between Xinjiang and Kyrgyzstan.
The quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers, a level considered shallow, which increases the likelihood of noticeable shaking at the surface. Although initial reports did not provide information on casualties or damage, the location near a sparsely populated border region may limit major impacts.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and further assessments were expected to determine whether infrastructure or remote villages were affected. The region has experienced seismic activity in the past due to complex tectonic structures beneath Central Asia.
