A powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the southern Philippines early Friday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The quake hit the Caraga region of Mindanao island, with tremors felt across Surigao del Norte and neighboring provinces, local media outlet ABS-CBN reported.
Phivolcs confirmed that the tectonic earthquake occurred approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) southeast of General Luna town at around 7:03 a.m. local time (23:03 GMT Thursday), at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
Authorities said no tsunami warning was issued following the tremor, and there were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage.
The Philippines, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences earthquakes due to its position on several active tectonic fault lines. Experts continue to monitor aftershocks and assess potential impacts in the affected areas.
