A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck the Dayton, Nevada area on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 8 kilometres (4.97 miles), based on initial seismic data released by the agency.
Residents across the region reported noticeable shaking, but as of now, there are no immediate reports of major damage or injuries. Authorities continue to monitor the area for possible aftershocks, which can follow tremors of this magnitude.
The quake was widely felt not only in Dayton but also in nearby communities. Experts say seismic activity of this strength has the potential to cause structural impacts, although full assessments are still underway.
USGS officials are expected to provide updated information as additional data is reviewed.
