A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the island of Kyushu, Japan, on Tuesday at 09:01 GMT, according to the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences. The seismic event was strong enough to be felt across a wide area, though early reports have not indicated any significant damage or injuries.
GFZ’s preliminary data places the epicenter at 33.01° north latitude and 131.01° east longitude, with a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Shallow earthquakes of this magnitude can often be felt more strongly near the surface, which explains the widespread shaking reported in the region.
Local authorities and seismic monitoring agencies continue to assess the situation and gather additional information as aftershocks remain possible.
