A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Türkiye’s Sea of Marmara on Thursday afternoon, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The epicenter was located off the coast of Marmaraereglisi in northwestern Tekirdag province at 2:55 pm local time (11:55 GMT).
The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.71 kilometers (4.2 miles), making it strongly felt in nearby regions. Residents in Istanbul, Tekirdag, and surrounding areas reported feeling the tremor.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gul confirmed that no damage has been reported in the city following the quake. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
The Sea of Marmara, which connects the Aegean Sea with the Black Sea, is known for its seismic activity, and Thursday’s earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to strong tremors.
