A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Davao Occidental, in the southern Philippines, early Tuesday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The quake’s epicenter was located about 80 kilometers off the town of Sarangani, at a depth of 100 kilometers, PHIVOLCS reported. So far, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The Philippines frequently experiences seismic and volcanic activity as it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
In October 2013, a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the country, causing widespread destruction and claiming more than 220 lives.
Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and advise residents to stay alert for updates from PHIVOLCS and local disaster management agencies.
