A tsunami advisory was issued for Iwate Prefecture after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Sunday evening. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), waves of up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) were possible along the Iwate coastline.
The earthquake occurred at 5:03 p.m., registering a shindo level 4 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale in the city of Morioka and the town of Yahaba. While no major damage or casualties were immediately reported, authorities urged residents in coastal areas to stay alert and move to higher ground if necessary.
The JMA continues to monitor seismic and oceanic activity closely and advises the public to remain cautious, as aftershocks or minor tsunami waves could follow.
