A severe heat wave has been hitting southern Italy for days, where temperatures have exceeded 43 degrees Celsius, causing six deaths so far.
According to international media, two deaths from cardiac arrest have been recorded today alone – a 60-year-old man and an 81-year-old man, who were on the beach.
Over the past four days, a 19-year-old Austrian tourist, two men aged 66 and 71, and a 60-year-old Italian woman have also lost their lives due to high temperatures. Doctors attribute the deaths mainly to the fatal impact of extreme temperatures.
Meteorologists warn that the heat wave, dubbed “Deve”, is expected to begin to subside from Thursday evening, but in some areas of southern Italy temperatures may still remain above the seasonal average.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and are appealing to citizens to take protective measures to avoid potential risks from extreme heat
