Residents in the Local Service District of Lethbridge and surrounding areas—including Oldford’s Hill to Southwest Bridge, as well as Forest Drive and Bayside Drive—were partially evacuated on Sunday, September 7, due to aggressive wildfire activity.
Emergency Measures and Evacuation Details
Provincial authorities have confirmed that a reception centre has been established at Anthony Paddon Elementary School in Musgravetown to assist impacted residents. Local Service District officials, alongside Ground Search and Rescue teams, are actively supporting evacuees and coordinating safety measures.
The wildfire originated at Sexton Lumber in Lethbridge, where flames spread from a bark pile to the adjacent forest. The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture quickly responded to the scene.
On Sunday afternoon and evening, three water bombers and multiple ground crews, supported by local fire departments, worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. Crews stayed overnight to monitor conditions and confirmed that fire suppression operations will continue throughout Monday.
Authorities remind all residents that a province-wide fire ban remains in effect across Newfoundland and Labrador. Residents are urged to comply with the ban and follow all official safety advisories to prevent further wildfire incidents.
