An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the Papua New Guinea region early Tuesday, according to the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.
The quake occurred at 07:22 GMT, with its epicenter located at a depth of approximately 104.8 kilometers, at coordinates 5.33° South latitude and 145.93° East longitude, as reported by News.Az citing Xinhua.
So far, no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage have been confirmed. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
Due to the relatively deep focal depth, the impact of the earthquake at the surface was limited, reducing the risk of major destruction.
Papua New Guinea lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active regions in the world, where earthquakes are a frequent occurrence.
