A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the North Pacific Ocean near Russia’s Far East early Thursday, according to the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The quake occurred at 12:42 a.m. local time at a depth of approximately 52 kilometers (32 miles). Its epicenter was located about 143 kilometers (89 miles) south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of the Kamchatka region.
Authorities have confirmed that no damage or casualties have been reported so far. The region is known for its high seismic activity, as it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire — one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world.
Seismologists continue to monitor the situation, while residents have been advised to remain alert in case of aftershocks.
