A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck India’s northeastern Assam state on Sunday, according to the National Center for Seismology. The tremor sent waves of panic across the region, with residents in multiple cities feeling the shaking.
Epicenter and Depth
The quake’s epicenter was recorded near Udalguri, a town in Assam. It struck at a relatively shallow depth of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), increasing the intensity of the tremors felt on the surface.
In Guwahati, the capital of Assam, terrified residents rushed out of their homes as the ground shook. Despite the panic, no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage have been confirmed by local authorities.
Seismic Risks in Northern India
Northern India is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. The area lies along a major geological fault line where the Indian tectonic plate collides with the Eurasian plate, a process that formed the mighty Himalayas. Because of this, Assam and neighboring states are prone to frequent earthquakes, some of which have caused devastating destruction in the past.
Authorities continue to monitor the region for possible aftershocks. Residents are advised to remain cautious, follow safety protocols, and stay updated through official emergency channels.
