A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Türkiye on Sunday, rattling the town of Simav in Kutahya province and nearby areas, according to authorities.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the tremor occurred at 12:59 p.m. local time (09:59 GMT) at a depth of approximately 8.46 kilometers (5.2 miles).
Earthquake Felt Across Nearby Provinces
Residents in surrounding provinces also felt the tremor, although there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, officials said. Emergency teams are monitoring the situation closely to ensure public safety.
Türkiye’s Seismic Activity
Türkiye lies on active seismic fault lines and experiences frequent earthquakes of varying intensities. The latest quake in Simav serves as a reminder of the country’s vulnerability to seismic activity, especially in its western regions.
Authorities have urged residents to stay alert for potential aftershocks and follow official updates from the AFAD.
