A magnitude 4.1 earthquake was recorded at 9:54 a.m. on Tuesday less than a mile from Paso Robles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The tremor was felt across several nearby communities, including Atascadero, Morro Bay, Los Osos and San Luis Obispo, as the shaking originated from a depth of just 3.5 miles.
Despite the noticeable jolt, the region has been relatively quiet seismically. Over the last 10 days, no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher have occurred near the area. Based on recent data, California and Nevada typically experience about 25 earthquakes each year in the 4.0 to 5.0 range, making today’s event part of the usual seismic activity in the broader region.
So far, there have been no reports of injuries or damage, but experts note that shallow quakes like this can be felt more strongly on the surface. Monitoring continues as officials watch for any potential aftershocks.
